What is a biomass boiler and why choose one?

A biomass boiler is like a regular boiler but runs on biomass fuel instead of fossil fuels. Biomass fuel is classed as carbon neutral and comes from sustainable wood sources and includes logs, wood chips or pellets. The benefits of biomass fuels are firstly that they are cheaper than fossil fuels, so most clients will see a saving compared to oil, gas or LPG. Secondly as a renewable energy source, they are better for the environment and this being the case, are eligible for significant grants from the Scottish Government. Lastly, by 2030, the Scottish Government have plans to ban the sale of new fossil fuel boilers, meaning at this point a change to a sustainable, carbon-neutral heating system, is inevitable.

Grants of up to £9,000 available for biomass boilers

The renewable nature of Biomass fuel means that customers installing biomass boilers may be eligible for Government Grants of up to £9,000. This funding is available to homeowners, people building their own homes, and private landlords. Interest free loans of up to £7,500 are also available, subject to approval. MCA Renewables have years of experience in advising customers on the application process and will be with you every step of the way to advise.

Biomass vs fossil fuel cost

Heating a property with biomass fuel, can be considerably more cost effective than fossil fuels, depending on what type of fuel you are currently using, and the market price for fossil fuels. Currently, though mains gas prices may be slightly cheaper (for how long we don’t know) than biomass fuel, properties using LPG, oil or electricity may see significant cost savings when making the switch. Even customers with properties on mains gas however are choosing to make the change, to reduce their carbon footprint. Biomass fuel sources are widely available online, and we can advise you of a few trusted suppliers to contact.

Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness

Terry was a great and reassuring resource in finding the most appropriate heating system for our old property. The fitting and install was carried out with a very high level of professionalism and integrity.
I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending MCA to anyone looking for a renewable heating solution.

What different types of Biomass Boiler do MCA install?

There are different types of biomass boiler available. An internal biomass boiler would be installed in a utility/plant room or garage/outbuilding. For properties with limited internal space, an external biomass boiler can be installed on an outside wall, or at a distance from the property, with the heat being transferred to the property via underground pipework. A glass-fronted biomass stove, similar in appearance to a wood-burner, is another option. This type of biomass stove is like a traditional boiler in that it heats your central heating system and hot water cylinder, but with the added benefit of the cosy experience of a wood-burning stove. Lastly, a cooker stove, which is the biomass boiler equivalent of a range cooker, once again heats your central heating system and hot water cylinder but also provides a hot plate and oven for cooking.
