What is an air source heat pump and why choose one?

An air source heat pump is a greener alternative to an oil or gas boiler. A unit mounted outside your property on, or near, an external wall, draws the air in and converts the heat within the air to usable heat, which can then be used for your radiators or underfloor heating. It can also heat a hot water cylinder. Although an air source heat pump in powered by electricity, it is classed as renewable energy because for every 1kW of energy used, on average around 3kW of heat is produced. The benefits of an air source heat pump are that they are cheaper than most fossil fuels, so clients will usually see a saving. Secondly, as a renewable energy source, they are better for the environment and this being the case, are eligible for significant grants from the Scottish Government. Lastly, by 2030, the Scottish Government have plans to ban the sale of new fossil fuel boilers, meaning at this point a change to a sustainable, carbon-neutral heating system, is inevitable for all of us.

Grants of up to £9,000 available for air source heat pumps

The renewable nature of air source heat pumps means that customers installing them may be eligible for Government Grants of up to £9,000. This funding is available to homeowners, people building their own homes, and private landlords. Interest free loans of up to £7,500 are also available, subject to approval. MCA Renewables have years of experience in advising customers on the application process and will be with you every step of the way to advise.

Air source heat pump vs fossil fuel cost

Heating a property with an air source heat pump, can be considerably more cost effective than fossil fuels, depending on what type of fuel you are currently using, and the market price for fossil fuels. Currently, though mains gas prices may be slightly cheaper (for how long we don’t know), properties using LPG, oil or electricity may see significant cost savings when making the switch. Even customers with properties on mains gas however are choosing to make the change, to reduce their carbon footprint.

Terry was a great and reassuring resource in finding the most appropriate heating system for our old property. The fitting and install was carried out with a very high level of professionalism and integrity.
I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending MCA to anyone looking for a renewable heating solution.

Will I need to change my central heating system to be able to have an air source heat pump installed?

Many properties will not need any changes made prior to installation. Often there is a benefit to be had in upgrading some of your existing radiators to higher output models. This can be assessed at the point of survey, and we can supply and install new radiators if required (or some customers opt to do this work themselves). If you have microbore pipework (skinny 8mm/10mm pipes) in your radiator system, then this should be replaced so that it doesn’t affect the flow rate and heat transfer going to your radiators, again this can be advised at the survey.

If you have a wet underfloor heating system then this is more often than not, easily compatible with the air source heat pump.
You will require a hot water cylinder to be able to provide hot water to your taps and showers. If you have one already then this would usually be replaced with a heat pump compatible cylinder or if your current boiler is a combi boiler, then a new hot water cylinder be required.
